Central Edmonton water main break: drivers asked to avoid area

By News Staff

Utility crews were working to locate the exact break of a water main in central Edmonton Tuesday morning.

EPCOR is asking drivers to avoid the area of 109 Street and 111 Avenue after a water main break caused flooding.

No customers are out of water, EPCOR adds.

“As soon we received a report of the break, we dispatched our crews who have now turned off the water,” the Edmonton utilities company told CityNews in a statement.

Edmonton police said the intersection of 109 Street and 111 Avenue was down to one lane in each direction.

EPCOR says water main breaks can occur when temperatures fluctuate.

“As the ground freezes and thaws, it can shift the earth and cause water mains to break,” the company said in a statement. “Signs of a water main break include water coming up from the ground, a pool of water on the road that is not near a drain or catch basin, and steam coming off the water in the winter.”
