There’s a wind of change gusting through the Edmonton downtown core transforming some buildings, new and old.
The wife of Oilers captain Connor McDavid, Lauren Kyle is starting a new business venture inside one of Edmonton’s oldest buildings, a restaurant inside the Canada Permanent building downtown.
Kyle announced the move on Instagram Monday.
While there’s no menu or hints of what it will look like inside just yet, it’s scheduled to open this spring.
The announcement of a new restaurant inside the core comes at a rocky time for the area — on the heels of two eateries shutting down on the same day. ‘Dalla Tavola Zenari’ and Filipino restaurant ‘Filistix’ both closed for good on New Year’s Eve.
“I think since 2020 and in the years since, we’ve fallen into this pattern of looking at everything through the lens of the pandemic. I think 2025 is the year we should stop doing that,” said Puneeta McBryan, CEO of the Downtown Business Association.
The Downtown Business Association says it’s natural for businesses to come and go, no matter how sad it is.
“The world of restaurants, bars, hospitality is always changing. There always needs to be something fresh. I don’t think we’re ever going to have a reality where there isn’t constant change and fresh blood coming in,” said McBryan.
McBryan says young entrepreneurs coming into downtown, like the McDavid’s get people to visit the core.
“Someone like her who I have no doubt is going to have a really thoughtful, beautiful design in that space and to do something really unique for Edmonton, is so exciting,” said McBryan.
