Bianca Millions finds out what the City of Edmonton has planned for New Years Eve, and where else in Edmonton and area you and catch a fireworks show.

Churchill Square is one of the places to be in Edmonton on New Year’s Eve.

Edmontonians are invited downtown to celebrate with free activities like live performances, skating outside city hall, and fire twirlers.

It all gets underway at 6 p.m.

“We’re excited to have our arts district partners with us. They’re going to have programming inside of the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Citadel, and the Winspear,” said Meshkin Makari with the City of Edmonton.

“The Rice Howard Way entertainment unit will be activated, so they’re going to have a bunch of street performers, live music, entertainment, and the bars and restaurants on Rice Howard Way, you’ll be able to go in and out with food and drinks.”

The fireworks are always the main attraction for New Year’s Eve celebrations, and this year the city has two shows planned: one at 8 p.m. for families with children, and a traditional midnight display to ring in the new year.

“The fireworks shows are fairly similar in length, you should expect about a 10- to 12-minute show, so definitely dress for the weather, come with your gloves, your toques, your mitts,” Makari told CityNews.

Road closures will be in effect starting at 7 a.m. Tuesday, and the city hall parkade will not be available for the event. The Stanley A. Milner library parkade and the Westin will remain open.

Public transit will be free starting at 6 p.m. It will last until about 3 a.m. on Jan 1.

Just down the road from Churchill Square, the Ice District Plaza will host an outdoor 7 p.m. viewing party of the Edmonton Oilers versus the Utah Hockey Club, followed by live music by Jade Eagleson and Dawson Gray. The fireworks will follow at midnight.

Around the city, the Woodcroft Community Centre will have fireworks at 9 p.m., and the Southwood Community League’s fireworks are set for 8 p.m.

In neighbouring communities, Sherwood Park has a firework display at 8 p.m., and St. Albert’s show is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
