Edmontonians react to Donald Trump wanting Canada to become part of the United States

As president elect Donald Trump continues to make comments about Canada becoming part of the United States, how do Edmontonians feel about it and what does Alberta’s premier, who will be attending Trump’s inauguration in January have to say?

“Don’t get me started,” said one Edmontonian.

Edmontonians don’t seem to be in the holiday spirit when it comes to the president elects comments on Canada becoming apart of the U.S.

Earlier this week the president elect posted to social media, saying ‘many Canadians want to become the 51st state.

Moreover, earlier this month, trump referred to prime minister Justin Trudeau as ‘governor’ after the two met to discuss tariffs.

Alberta premier Danielle Smith did not comment on Canada becoming the 51st state on Thursday, instead turning her attention to the president elect’s comments on trade deficits between the two countries.

Premier smith will be in Washington D.C in January to attend the Trump inauguration remotely, while meeting with members of the trump administration.

“President elect trump tweeted out: “No one can explain why we have a 100 billion dollar trade deficit with Canada.” well, I can explain that, it’s because we sell them a lot of commodities — we sell them timber and oil and gas and food products, critical minerals. And as a result, when those prices fluctuate, our trade deficit goes up and our trade deficit goes down,” said Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta.

Some Edmontonians that spoke with CityNews said they don’t like the idea of becoming Americans, with some wondering if the president elect is really joking.

“I don’t care if he says it, sometimes he means it, he always says something like a ‘joke’,” said another Edmontonian.
