Friends and colleagues gather to mourn slain security guard

Hundreds of people gathering in downtown Edmonton to remember the life of a 20-year-old student killed last week.

Friends’ family and students at Norquest College in downtown Edmonton, gathered to remember the life of 20-year-old Harshandeep Singh, killed in a shooting in downtown Edmonton last week.

Edmonton police say Singh was gunned down while working as a security guard inside this downtown Edmonton apartment building, last Friday.

Two people now face first degree murder charges in connection his death.

Thursday afternoon, Singh’s cousin telling media he has no words to describe the tragedy but says he and Singh’s family are grateful for the community’s support.

“They are supporting us and also the government of Canada, they’re standing with us and thank you,” said Navjot Singh Shergill, Singh’s cousin.

Friends of Singh’s family saying at Thursday’s vigil he had only been in Edmonton for a year and a half, with dreams of one day joining the Edmonton police service.

A business administration student, Singh’s instructors saying he’ll be remembered as a kind person, well liked by his classmates with a love for video games.

“I couldn’t believe that something like this could even happen to one of our students at Norquest, very tragic, and it’s just really hard for us to process,” said Gayle St. Denis, Business Administration Chair, Norquest College.

Those in Edmonton’s Sikh community helping Singh’s family back home in India say, his death has taken a major toll on his family.

“Family condition is very tough. I talk to them every evening and morning. So, we have no words to say to them, anything. We can just help them, they are waiting for the body of Harshandeep,” said Gulzar Singh Nirman, Social Worker.

A funeral service will be held for Singh this Sunday. Spokespeople for Singh’s family say he’ll be honoured by the city’s first responders.
