New Spruce Grove high school to be built 5 months earlier than expected: officials

By News Staff

The replacement of Spruce Grove Composite High School is being accelerated and will now be built by summer 2027 – five months earlier than previously scheduled.

That was part of an announcement by the Alberta government Wednesday that touted accelerated funding approval for Spruce Grove Composite and 10 other school projects across the province – without having to wait for the next budget cycle.

The replacement Spruce Grove High School is expected to increase its capacity by 663 spaces for Grade 10-12 students – from 1,247 to 1,910.

“Approving in-year school funding helps us meet the increased demand for student spaces in Alberta’s growing communities faster than before,” Alberta Infrastructure Minister Pete Guthrie said in a news release.

In September, the UCP government announcement a plan – the School Construction Accelerator Program – to create 200,000 student spaces over the next seven years at a cost of $8.6 billion.

The program vows to approve up to 30 new schools and eight modernization or replacement schools every year for the next three years.

The province says the plan eases the pressures of increasing student enrollment and aging school infrastructure.
