Edmonton activates extreme cold weather response

The City of Edmonton activated its extreme weather response Friday to help its vulnerable population, while Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the city and parts of Alberta.

Edmonton is seeing the mercury drop significantly in the coming days. Friday night will drop to -13 Celsius overnight.

The forecast for Sunday overnight is -17 C, and -18 C for Monday night. Temperatures are expected to warm up Tuesday before dropping again Wednesday and Thursday.

The city’s cold weather plan includes three bus routes that will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night to transport people to shelters with capacity.

Fifty temporary shelter spaces will open Monday night at the city-funded Al Rashid Mosque in north Edmonton. The Bissell Centre and Boyle Street Community Centre are extending their daytime hours of operation.

The response is expected to last until Dec. 1 at 9 a.m.
