Update ahead on Alberta’s fight against proposed federal oil and gas cap

By Lauryn Heintz

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and three of her minister are continuing the province’s fight against the federal government’s proposed oil and gas emissions cap.

A press conference is scheduled just after noon Tuesday, where the United Conservative government is expected to share an update on its response to the Liberal’s plan.

In December 2023, the Government of Canada announced a plan to introduce a cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the oil and gas sector.

It proposes to cap 2030 emissions at 35 to 38 percent below 2019 levels, but there would be a flexibity for compliace at 20 to 23 per cent below 2019 levels.

The federal government’s goal is to meet net-zero by 2050.

Alberta’s government has long opposed the feds’ plan.

Smith has previously said the proposal “punishes” Alberta’s main industry and has indicated there are plans to take the federal government to court.
