Driver dead after swerving to avoid deer in Athabasca County: RCMP

Police say the driver of an SUV was killed on the highway in Athabasca County after swerving to avoid a deer and colliding head-on into a semi truck on Sunday night.

Alberta RCMP say the collision on Highway 63 and Range Road 192 happened around 10:50 p.m.

Police say the driver of the SUV, which was driving south on Highway 63, was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the semi, which was going north, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police say. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

The highway was reopened to traffic after several hours.

Athabasca is roughly 150 kilometres north of Edmonton.
