Through initial stages of an investigation, police learned that the motorcycle was heading east on Highway 39 near Warburg — roughly 75 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. At the time, he was in a group that was in a memorial bike run.

Witnesses claim the motorcyclist lost control of his bike and crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided head-on with the minivan.
