By News Staff

An Edmonton man is facing multiple charges after police say drugs and a weapon were seized during a traffic stop near Whitecourt last week.

Whitecourt RCMP say their investigation began after a suspect was caught speeding on Highway 43. Police allege the vehicle was captured on radar going faster than 200 km/h.

Police say Edmonton’s Darren Shannon, 36, was arrested.

They say several items were seized in a subsequent search, including a loaded 9mm handgun and ammunition, handcuffs, bags suspected to contain methamphetamine, cocaine and psilocybins, and numerous unstamped tobacco products. Authorities have estimated the value of the items seized at $100,000.

Shannon is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Whitecourt is about 170 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
