TransEd employee injured after semi-truck allegedly turns right on red, collides with Valley Line LRT

Police say one person on a Valley Line LRT was injured after a semi-truck collided with the train in southeast Edmonton on Tuesday morning.

The Edmonton Police Service believes the driver of the semi-truck turned right against a red light and drove into the path of the LRT, which was pushed off the tracks as a result.

The injured occupant of the LRT was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. That person was identified by the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) as a TransEd staff member.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the people involved, as well as the other riders and staff involved in this incident,” Ryan Birch, the director of bus and security operations at ETS, told CityNews in a statement.

“We appreciate the assistance of emergency responders who attended the scene.”

The train appears to have sustained damage to its front windshield, notably on the driver’s side.

“LRT replacement bus service will remain in place for the duration of the service disruption,” Birch said.

The Whitemud Drive off-ramp remained closed Tuesday afternoon.

Edmonton police say they are investigating the collision.
