Service resuming on Edmonton Valley Line LRT after collision with truck

Two people were injured in a collision involving the Valley Line SE LRT and a truck hauling a dump trailer, forcing a suspension of service on Monday morning.

The collision happened at 75 Street and Roper Road, near Davies Station, around 9:30 a.m. Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) tells CityNews in a statement the truck turned east onto Roper against a red light.

“The northbound LRT train collided with the truck and trailer, separating the truck from the trailer and derailing the front of the LRT,” a spokesperson for ETS said.

Marks on the road appeared to show where the train had left the rails. The front of the train appeared to have been damaged.

One passenger from the train was taken to hospital as a precaution, ETS said. The LRT operator also sustained minor injuries, according to a subsequent statement from Walter Cadieux, the acting director of bus and security operations at ETS.

“We appreciate the assistance of emergency responders who attended the scene,” Cadieux said. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the people involved, as well as the other riders and staff involved in this incident.”

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Following the collision, ETS suspended Valley Line service between Millbourne/Woodvale and Bonnie Doon. Service began to resume around 3:30 p.m.

LRT replacement buses, which were in service between the stops during the day, were scheduled to end at 4 p.m.

Valley Line service between Mill Woods and Millbourne/Woodvale stops, as well as between Bonnie Doon and 102 Street stops, was not interrupted.

Roper Road, eastbound and westbound, was closed while ETS dealt with the damaged train.

The incident is under investigation by the Edmonton Police Service. CityNews has reached out to the EPS for more information.
