Police make arrest in ‘brazen’ shooting at north Edmonton children’s spray park that saw 24 bullets fly

By News Staff

Edmonton police say one suspect was arrested last week, more than four months after a shooting in the parking lot of a children’s spray park in north Edmonton.

The Edmonton Police Service is looking to identify more suspects involved in the Apr. 11 shooting, which officers are describing as “brazen.”

Police say around 9 p.m. that night, an “arranged meeting” involving multiple people took place in the Poplar Park Spray Park parking lot near Florence Hallock school.

The EPS says a “dispute” led to 24 bullets being fired by multiple suspects, who then fled the area in their vehicles.

“The rounds struck numerous uninvolved residences and two of the suspect vehicles,” EPS said in a news release. “No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting. After the shooting, one vehicle was found completely burned.”

Police say a search of a south Edmonton home on Aug. 14 led to officers finding a loaded handgun, evidence from the spray park shooting, and approximately 170 grams of cocaine.

“Initial ballistic testing has indicated that the handgun seized from the residence was the one used in the shooting,” police add.

George Ishiekwene, 24, was arrested at the home, according to police. He was charged with seven offences, including reckless discharge of a firearm, and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

“Our Firearms Investigation Unit was created to tackle this exact type of brazen public violence, with the goal of holding those responsible accountable for their actions,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Stewart with the Guns and Gangs Section.

“FIU continues to investigate this shooting and is asking anyone with information on the other suspects to come forward.”

Anyone who has information about this shooting is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
