Evacuation order issued for Jasper due to fast approaching wildfire

By Michael Ranger

An evacuation order has been issued for Jasper and the surrounding area due to a fast approaching wildfire.

The province issued the alert late Monday evening, warning of a wildfire south of town and asking all residents in Jasper and Jasper National Park to evacuate immediately.

Everyone is being asked to be out of the town by 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

People are being asked to use Highway 16 towards the British Columbia border to leave the area. Anyone who needs a ride is being asked to go to the Activity Centre, Forest Park Hotel or Maligne Lodge.

“Follow directions from local authorities,” reads the alert. “Bring identification, important documents, medication, pets and your emergency kit with you.”

Check for updates on the province’s emergency alert page.

This is a developing story. More to come.
