Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man who was allegedly pointing a gun at a transit bus was shot at by an Edmonton police officer on Tuesday night.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says the suspect is in hospital in critical but stable condition.
By Wednesday morning, a section of Whyte Avenue between 95A Street and 91 Street was taped off.
Police say around midnight, officers responded to a weapons complaint at Whyte Ave and 93 Street. They allege a man was pointing what appeared to be a gun at an individual and waving the object in the air.
Officers arrived to find the suspect pointing the purported weapon at a bus, according to police. After a “confrontation,” an EPS officer fired at the man.
Edmonton police say officers took the suspect in custody and provided first aid, before he was transported to hospital.
Police say a replica handgun was recovered from the scene.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating.
Reaction from neighbourhood
A business owner in the area told CityNews she was shocked but not surprised to see police as she came to work Wednesday morning.
Brianna Vallet, the co-owner of Flirt Cupcakes — one of the businesses near the crime scene — says she’s “been seeing a lot of crimes” in the area.
“We were affected because we open at 11, I don’t think they open back up until 15 mins ago, but they affect us from traffic coming this way,” Vallet said.
Vallet said the store’s baker witnessed the responders arriving at the scene.
“Our baker here last night was sending us videos of people coming in and going, but he didn’t hear anything, he just saw it after the fact.”
