One arrested after dog left in hot car at West Edmonton Mall

Edmonton police officers have arrested and charged a person for leaving their dog unattended in a vehicle Wednesday, as the temperature outside had reached 36 degrees.

It happened Wednesday at West Edmonton Mall parking lot. Animal Control Peace Officers had to break the window to rescue the dog and take the dog into their custody.

According to officials, the driver eventually returned to the vehicle 45 minutes later, where EPS officers arrested and charged them with Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal.

Police once again waring pet owners to not leave their pets in unattended in vehicles during extreme heat conditions. On a warm day, even vehicles parked in the shade with the windows rolled down can reach a staggering 49 degrees in minutes, stated the police.

According to the City of Edmonton, between May 2024 and July 8th, there have been 49 reported complaints to Animal Control of pets in hot cars.
