ASIRT looking into death of man fatally shot by Edmonton police

Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — says they are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting on June 29 in the Fraser neighbourhood.

ASIRT says through the initial stages of their investigation, police received a report of a roll-over collision on Anthony Henday Drive around 8:55 p.m.

Reports indicate that the driver of the collision had fled the scene on foot, prior to Edmonton police arriving, and officers began searching the nearby area.

Around 9:11 p.m., Air 1 was called in to help locate the driver. By 9:21 p.m., a man matching the driver’s description was found and an EPS officer radioed it in.

The officer then got out of his vehicle, and the man “stopped walking and raised his arms to his sides while facing the officer who had his gun drawn,” according to reports.

Both the officer and the man spoke to each other, before the officer fired his gun, killing the man.
