Hundreds of tickets handed out by RCMP over Canada Day long weekend

Alberta RCMP handed out hundreds of tickets over Canada Day long weekend across the province.
Mounties say between June 28 and July 1, 1,679 traffic tickets were issued.
Additionally, 101 impaired drivers were also removed from roads during that period.
Of those, 79 drivers reportedly received Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) FAILs and 22 received IRS WARNs, according to RCMP.
“Sadly, there were seven fatalities due to road-related incidents over the long weekend. These are individuals who would have been back home on Tuesday. They are our family members, friends, coworkers, and neighbours. It’s devastating,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic.
“While our officers work to uphold traffic safety, Albertans also have a role to play in helping ensure everyone makes it home safely.”
From the traffic tickets handed out, RCMP say 780 were issued for speed-related offences, 31 were for distracted driving, and 34 were for improper use of vehicle safety restraints.
Mounties also note additional enforcement was conducted on Highway 1 between Banff and Lake Louise.
From that enforcement, 178 tickets were handed out. A total of 144 were for speeding, 11 for speeds over 50 km/h.
Several drivers are facing mandatory court charges and the cost of tickets cost over $42,000.
