Possible vehicle explosion, fire at West Edmonton Mall parkade

Firefighters and police called to West Edmonton Mall Tuesday afternoon for reports of a vehicle explosion.

Edmonton fire crews were called to the West Edmonton Mall Tuesday afternoon about a possible vehicle explosion.

Reports about the explosion and fire in a parkade on the southeast side of the mall were made to Edmonton Fire Rescue Services at 1:10 p.m.

EFRS tells CityNews the fire was under control by 1:29 p.m. and called out at 2:49 p.m.

There were no injuries reported to Edmonton Fire.

The Edmonton Police Service, which was notified around 1:25 p.m., said it is investigating the incident. An area surrounding the vehicle was taped off.

“Thankfully there were no occupants inside the vehicle at the time of the fire,” a police spokesperson told CityNews in an email.

A representative for the West Edmonton Mall told CityNews the normal operations of the mall were not impacted.

“There continues to be ample parking around the property for patrons,” they said.
