EPS investigating 12 incidents of objects thrown into traffic from Whitemud overpasses

By News Staff

Edmonton police say they are investigating a dozen instances of objects being thrown from overpasses onto Whitemud Drive.

The Edmonton Police Service says those 12 incidents occurred between March 27 and June 22.

“Rocks or other heavy pieces of debris were reportedly thrown from pedestrian bridges onto Whitemud Drive between 149 Street and 184 Street,” police said in a news release Friday.

“The incidents have caused significant damage to vehicles and put the occupants at risk of serious injury.”

Police say they have not yet determined if any of those 12 incidents in west Edmonton are linked to similar events in south Edmonton late last year and early this year.

In one incident in February, police say a man threw a concrete slab from an overpass on Whitemud Drive into traffic, striking a vehicle on the passenger side. The driver suffered minor injuries.

Edmonton police warn throwing objects into traffic can have deadly consequences.

“In 2002, a 75-year-old man was killed in an incident like this, and two teenagers were charged with manslaughter,” said Cst. Tylar Heigh in the news release.
