Edmonton police still looking for tips in fatal southside shooting of father, son in November

Edmonton police are still looking for tips from the public seven months after the fatal daylight shooting of a father and his son outside a south Edmonton fast-food restaurant.

Harpreet Uppal, 41, and his 11-year-old son Gavin were killed Nov. 9, 2023, while parked outside an A&W at Ellerslie Road and 50th Street.

In a news release issued Thursday, police said officers arrived to find the father and son “in medical distress.” They died of their injuries at the scene.

Police have maintained Gavin was deliberately killed. A second boy was also in the car at the time of the shooting and was not physically harmed.

The killings sent shockwaves through Edmonton.

Edmonton police have said Uppal had drug and gang connections; he was previously targeted in a 2021 restaurant shooting.

On Thursday, EPS sent a reminder they are still looking for suspects and a suspect vehicle – a black BMW SUV.

In surveillance video released by police in November, in the days following the fatal shooting, a passenger can be seen exiting the vehicle, then the driver. Both run out of the video’s frame, then can be seen running back. The vehicle then drives away.

“This level of deadly violence in our community is unacceptable, and we’d like to assure the citizens of Edmonton that we are continuing to actively investigate these deaths,” Det. Braydon Lawrence with the EPS homicide section said in the news release. “We are certain that someone knows this vehicle and these suspects, and we are hopeful that these visuals will prompt them to come forward.

“The EPS is committed to finding the persons responsible and holding them accountable.”

Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact EPS at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
