West Edmonton Business Block moves to renewable energy

By CityNews Staff

The West Edmonton Business Block will be running primarily on renewable energy after successfully installing solar panels.

Former Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel was a major driver in the Creative Hive’s move to solar power.

“Each of us needs to do what we can to positively impact the environment and this installation makes good business sense,” said Mandel.

He tells CityNews the provincial moratorium on renewables did not impact their progress because they already had grants.

Local electrical company, Action Electrical, also contributed to the installation of the solar panels.

Blake Bunting with Action Electrical says they expect to produce more power than the building requires.

From this project, the Creative Hive will produce around 160,000 kWh per year between April and September. That is roughly equivalent to powering 40 average single-family homes every month.
