Mayor Sohi to attend first international conference on addressing homelessness

Edmonton’s Mayor Amarjeet Sohi will be attending an international conference in Paris, France aimed at addressing homelessness.

The group of leaders and experts will discuss pressing challenges for cities, share what works, and highlight local best practices on a global stage.

“Access to affordable, accessible and appropriate housing is essential to ending houselessness and building socially and economically thriving cities. Edmonton is committed to exploring every avenue to build more homes and support unhoused Edmontonians,” said Sohi in a statement.

“We’re working with other levels of government, partnering with the community, and now we are working with experts and jurisdictions around the world who are facing similar issues.”

Sohi was invited to the meeting by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo as a member of the International Mayor’s Council on Homelessness.

Edmonton’s mayor is also a representative of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Big City Mayors’ Caucus, and will be reporting information gathered from the meeting across Canada.

Additionally, he will be sharing how Edmonton has taken actions to reduce homelessness and notes that the city is being recognized as a leader in reducing barriers to building housing.

He will also be joined by officials from one other Canadian city, Medicine Hat.
