Hopeful Edmonton fans followed their love for hockey and the Oilers down to Florida for the opening two games of the Stanley Cup final.

It’s Edmonton’s first appearance in the final since 2006 – and some Oilers fans wanted to be there in person for the moment 18 years in the making.

“They beat three really good teams so far. I think they could do it. I really have hope and faith in them,” one fan told CityNews’ Elliott Knopp, who is in Florida.

“We’ve chased the Stanley Cup with the Oilers so far. We went to L.A., watched a couple of games there, and we figured we got to come down here and support the boys,” said another fan.

“I saw them in the ‘80s,” added a third. “Was at all the games in 2006 and it’s great to see them now.”

One fan took a red eye flight from Toronto to Florida.

“Even at one in the morning, there was still a whole group of Lebanese people, they had like the cowboy hats going, they had the Oilers jerseys going. There was a vintage Tikkanen jersey – that wasn’t made in a shop, that was from the ‘80s, absolutely. And you can just feel it, the whole city has been alive.”
