No injuries in playground fire near 2 northeast Edmonton schools

A playground fire at a park between two schools in northeast Edmonton Tuesday morning is being investigated by fire crews.

There were no reported injuries in the “fully involved fire” at the Hairsine Park playground, which is between John D. Bracco School (Edmonton Public Schools) and St. Bonaventure Elementary School (Edmonton Catholic School Division).

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services tells CityNews crews were called to the scene at 10:34 a.m., with two units responding. The fire was deemed under control at 10:46 a.m., and out by 10:59 a.m.

Red plastic playground slides and metal stairs were blackened by the blaze. A portion of the playground was roped off by yellow caution tape.

Edmonton Public says no students were at the playground when the fire happened, and no injuries were reported.

“As a precaution, the school kept students inside at lunch today,” an EPSB spokesperson said in an email. “A letter was sent home to families to let them know about the incident.”

A spokesperson for St. Bonaventure Catholic says none of their students were on the playground at the time of the fire.
