A deal’s a deal: Edmonton Oilers flag flying proudly over Vancouver City Hall

Adding insult to injury for disappointed Canucks fans, the Edmonton Oilers flag is flying high above Vancouver City Hall.
The move is part of honouring a bet between Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.
The cities’ elected officials made a friendly wager a couple weeks ago at the beginning of the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
“If the Vancouver Canucks – or when the Vancouver Canucks – beat the Edmonton Oilers, we’d like you to fly the flag of our beloved Canucks above city hall, and rock one of these amazing Vancouver Canucks jerseys,” Sim said in a video posted to X, outlining the terms to Sohi.
“And in the unlikely event that Edmonton actually wins, we will do the same.”
Meanwhile, B.C. Premier David Eby must also deliver a statement, written by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, in the BC Legislature, thanks to a similar bet over the series.
Sohi has now issued a similar challenge to the mayor of Dallas, with the Dallas Stars facing off against the Oilers Thursday in the first game of the Western Conference Finals.
“…as the last Canadian team standing, we’ve got the full force of the great white north behind us!,” Sohi said in a post on X. “We already know Alberta beef is better, and the northern lights beat southern heat any day.”
The Vancouver Canucks fell to the Oilers in Game 7 of the second series of the playoffs Monday.
