Tornado warning issued for parts of central Alberta

A tornado warning is in effect for parts of central Alberta near the town of Hanna.

An emergency alert issued around 3:30 p.m. Thursday warns of a severe thunderstorm near the communities of Hanna and Richdale that could produce a tornado.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” reads the warning from Environment Canada. “Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes.”

The following communities are included in the warning:

  • Hanna
  • Spondin
  • Youngstown
  • Sedalia
  • Oyen
  • Sibbald

The weather agency warns the storm could bring damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall.

Residents are being urged to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
