Oilers fans criticize price hike on social media as playoff tickets go on sale

Edmonton Oilers captain Conor McDavid makes NHL history ahead of playoffs that kickoff this weekend. Christine O'Loughlin has more on how downtown Edmonton business are preparing for the flood of fans during games.

Some Edmonton Oilers fans have been feeling priced out of the playoffs since the team announced the cost of post-season tickets at Rogers Place.

That sentiment was renewed as first-round tickets went on sale Tuesday morning.

Several social media comments expressed dismay at the price to cheer on Connor McDavid and the rest of the team in person.

“Disgusting price hike,” one person wrote on X in reply to the Oilers announcing the opening of the virtual ticket office.

“That’s pricey- I may have to watch from my couch this year, but for those who can drop the coin enjoy!” wrote another.

The least expensive ticket for Game 1 of the opening round was a verified resale ticket in the upper bowl for $283.

Prices are up roughly 25 per cent for first-round playoff tickets compared to last year, with the gap only increasing for later rounds.

“$233 + fees just to get in the door per person. I guess me and my son will watch from home,” X user Brett wrote.

“Sorry Oilers… you’ve missed the mark,” said Ted.

The Oilers clinched a playoff spot April 5 after a season that saw the team completely turn around a difficult start and put together the second longest winning streak in NHL history.

Fans who don’t make it inside the stadium for this year’s playoff run have the opportunity to party with Oil Country outside the venue. Popular watch parties in Ice District Plaza and the Scotiabank Fan Park are returning this year, the team announced.

The playoff games are broadcast on giant screens, and there are DJs, live bands, contests and special guests. They have become staples of the Oilers’ playoff runs in recent years.
