11-year-old boy killed by dogs identified as B.C. resident

The 11-year-old boy who died following a dog attack in Edmonton has been identified as a B.C resident. As Laura Krause reports, a small memorial is left outside the house where it happened.

Edmonton’s mayor says the city will investigate the case of an 11-year-old boy killed this week in an attack by two large dogs at a southside home.

Amarjeet Sohi says it will review previous complaints made to animal control officials about the two dogs to determine if there were any gaps in how they were handled.

“We all expect that when people take on the responsibility of having pets in their private homes that they will live up to the expectations that are in the licensing bylaw and that they be responsible pet owners,” said Sohi.

“It’s devastating to see the negligence of a dog owner that led to this tragedy.”

The city says animal control officers had been called to the home about two other attacks earlier this year and that there was a history of complaints over incessant barking.

The Edmonton Humane Society says while the incident is “profoundly distressing” it highlights the need for education and awareness around responsible pet guardianship.

“As we mourn the devastating loss of this young boy, our goal of ensuring the safety of both animals and people is stronger than ever,” says Liza Sunley, CEO of the Edmonton Humane Society.

“We are dedicated to advocating for safe interactions with animals, including educating the community on responsible pet guardianship, how to understand dog behavioural signs and how to take action to ensure safety.”

In a statement to CityNews, School District No. 53 (Okanagan Similkameen) where the boy went to school said “Upon receiving news on Tuesday morning, the district’s critical incident team was immediately gathered, notified of the situation, and developed a response plan to support the staff and students.”

They add supports will be made available as needed, and will be provided by the district.

“Due to the nature of this tragedy and the young age of the student and their peers, the school and district would ask for privacy as we work to support students and staff, and for the family who is now dealing with their loss.  The school and district send our heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Police say officers responded to the home Monday evening and found the boy severely hurt.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Signs are posted at the home warning passersby to beware of dogs, and one neighbour says she now worries about the safety of her child on the street.
