Albertan judoka Christa Deguchi wins gold at Antalya Grand Slam competition

By Alejandro Melgar

Alberta’s Christa Deguchi defeated Brazil’s Jessica Lima on Friday to capture gold in the under-57 kilogram category at the Antalya Grand Slam judo competition for Canada.

The Lethbridge resident, Deguchi, was the first to go on the offensive in overtime and secured the win.

She bested Austria’s Laura Kallinger, Guinea’s Mariana Esteves, South Korea’s Juhee Kim and Faiza Mokdar of France earlier Friday to clinch a spot in the final.

It was Deguchi’s second Grand Slam title of the year and 10th crown of her career.

The Albertan’s first title of 2024 was when she won gold at a judo Grand Slam in the under-57 kilogram in February, defeating Nora Gjakova of Kosovo, who had to withdraw due to an injury.
