2 truck drivers dead in highway crash north of Fort Saskatchewan: RCMP

Police say two semi truck drivers were killed after their vehicles collided just north of Fort Saskatchewan Tuesday morning.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP say the deceased were identified as a 41-year-old Edmonton resident and a 34-year-old Millett resident.

Police were called to Highway 825 near Boysdale Road shortly before 11 a.m. Officers arrived to find both semi trucks on fire.

The preliminary investigation suggests a truck carrying pipes was going south when it crossed over the centre line, striking head-on the northbound truck that was carrying empty propane tanks, according to police.

Mounties add other vehicles were damaged by hitting debris or taking evasive action.

Law-enforcement agencies from the RCMP, Gibbons and Sturgeon County fire, Transport Canada, Fish and Wildlife, Alberta Sheriffs and Sturgeon County Peace Officers were on the scene for several hours Tuesday responding to the fire and investigating the crash.
