Arrest made in fatal U-Haul hit and run: RCMP

Beaumont RCMP say an arrest was made Tuesday night in connection to the fatal hit and run of a Fort Saskatchewan mother involving a U-Haul fleeing police.

Police say the arrest was made in the Wainwright area.

“Additional details are not available on this quickly developing investigation at this time,” Beaumont RCMP wrote in a brief news release.

“As this investigation develops and/or charges are laid further updates will be provided.”

The U-Haul truck was fleeing police from Beaumont to Edmonton on Saturday when it allegedly struck and killed Kassandra Gartner, a mother who worked at the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank.

Police say the 45-year-old Gartner was struck while checking on the damage to her vehicle after she drove over police spikes intended for the U-Haul.

After the U-Haul was itself disabled by police spikes – coming to a stop outside a gas station and 7-Eleven at 50 Street and 22 Avenue SW – the suspect stole a Honda Civic with a child inside, according to police.

The child was found unharmed shortly after, police say, and the Civic was later recovered.
