Alberta will play host to a long list of international hockey tournaments over the next few years, including the world junior championship in 2027.
Hockey Canada and the Alberta government made the announcement Saturday at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
The host cities have not been announced yet. Edmonton hosted the tournament in 2021 and 2022.
The province estimates the 2027 World Juniors will draw more than 400,000 fans to the province throughout the pre-tournament and championship games.
“What a great honour to have it back in Alberta,” former Team Canada player Ryan Smyth said via the Edmonton Oilers’ X page. “One of my fondest memories was playing in 1995. What a great honour it was to put that maple leaf in front of our chest.”
Calgary will host the World Para Hockey Championship at WinSport in May, while Edmonton receives the Hlinka Gretzky Cup this summer.
Alberta will also welcome the Canada vs. U.S. women’s rivalry series in 2025 and 2026, and the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
The provincial government says it will provide $11 million in funding for those tournaments — and four years of Hockey Canada summer camps — if budget 2024 is passed.
