Sohi, some councillors returning to Edmonton City Hall Monday

Edmonton’s mayor will return to city hall Monday, the city said in a news release.

Amarjeet Sohi, some city councillors and other municipal staff will return to Edmonton City Hall for the first time since the Jan. 23 shooting.

“It is shocking. It’s traumatic for our staff, people who work there, and people who go there and we want to make sure that we are providing them safety,” Sohi told OMNI News Friday.

City hall remains closed to the public, and the parkade remains closed to staff and the public.

A suspect described by police as “heavily armed” with a long gun and Molotov cocktails entered city hall, allegedly fired multiple rounds and started a small fire before being detained by a security guard.

Bezhani Sarvar, 28, is facing six charges, including careless use of a firearm and throwing an explosive substance.

The city is calling the reopening of its municipal building as “voluntary, phased and flexible.”

“City staff who work in the building are being given the opportunity to return to their work stations if they feel comfortable doing so,” the City of Edmonton said in its news release Friday.

Council meetings have been held virtually in the meantime, Sohi says.

City officials are considering adjustments to security measures related to the building.
