ASIRT investigating police-involved shooting in Callingwood

Alberta’s police watchdog says it is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Edmonton’s Callingwood neighbourhood last month.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Teams (ASIRT) says around 5:55 p.m. on Jan. 23, EPS responded to a report of a domestic dispute near 64 Avenue and 172 Street.

The report indicated it was a family disturbance and threats were involved between a 19-year-old and a 12-year-old.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were reportedly confronted by the 19-year-old, who police say was holding a knife.

A confrontation ensued, and one officer used a taser and a gun, which ended up hitting the young adult.

She received first aid at the scene, before being taken to a hospital, where she is recovering from a serious injury.

Police say the knife was also seized following the altercation.

Edmonton police are still investigating the original report of the disturbance and threats, but ASIRT says it will be running its own investigation into the use of force by the officer.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have any information to contact them at 780-644-1483.
