EPCOR issues mandatory ban on non-essential water use for Edmonton and area

EPCOR is implementing a mandatory ban on non-essential water use, due to a pump issue at E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant.

The company says around 2 a.m., there was a failure in the pump equipment systems that moves water from the treatment plant to the distribution system.

EPCOR says all residents and businesses in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Beaumont, and Fort Saskatchewan, need to eliminate non-essential water use until further notice.

Businesses that use large amounts of water, such as laundromats and car washes, are being asked to halt water use. However, businesses using water to deliver a product or service that is life-sustaining for people, animals, and plants are exempt.

“At this time, it is unknown when water service from E.L. Smith will be restored. Water restriction measures will be in place until the repair is completed. An update will be provided when there is a change in status,” said EPCOR in a statement.

EPCOR notes the Rossdale Water Treatment Plant remains operational, however, it can not adequately supply all of the affected areas, and customers may experience low water pressure, due to the pump issues.

Lastly, EPCOR notes there is no impact to the quality of drinking water.
