Newly built home destroyed by overnight fire

Edmonton Police are investigating a fire that destroyed a newly built home in the south east community of Laurel on Friday.

Residents in southeast Edmonton woke up to a newly built home, destroyed by fire overnight.

Fire crews were called to a home near 19 Street and 20 Avenue, area just after 1:30 a.m., arriving on the scene within seven minutes.

No injuries were reported, but neighbours tell CityNews the heat damaged the windows of the house next door. Fire officials say the blaze was completely out by 6 a.m.

Multiple neighbours say they are concerned for their safety, especially with this home being surrounded by many family homes. Security was present overnight, but the fire started on the side of the home that was just out of view of security.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Police officers Friday morning were going door to door asking for information.

Police were unable to confirm at this point if the fire was linked to recent extortion cases.

The community where this happened is called Laurel. It’s directly across the road from the community of Aster, where three vacant homes were destroyed by fire within the last few months. Those are under investigation for arson.
