The City of Edmonton is planning to lift its extreme weather response Monday morning as temperatures are forecasted to rise significantly.
Western Canada was gripped by bitter cold and biting winds last week.
Northern Alberta is the only part of the country still under an extreme cold warning as of Saturday, with wind chill values nearing -40 overnight.
Conditions are set to improve into next week in Edmonton, with temperatures even climbing above freezing point by Thursday and Friday.
That’s led the city to rescind its extreme weather response Monday at 8 a.m. It’s normally activated when conditions of -20 C with wind chill are in the forecast for three consecutive days.
“The deactivation of the extreme weather response is being announced today to give individuals time to adjust their plans for accessing shelter,” the city said in a news release Saturday.
As a result, the city is suspending its third overnight Winter Shelter Shuttle Service (west route); the 50 temporary emergency shelter spaces at Al Rashid Mosque will close; municipal facilities like libraries will no longer serve as shelter from the cold.
