Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) says it is dealing with several issues brought on by the cold snap.
In a statement to CityNews Monday, Trevor Dennehy, the director of LRT Operations & Maintenance, says snow and extreme cold led to electrical components freezing on the Capital and Metro lines.
In addition, there was a track switch issue at Century Park that needed repairs, which reduced the number of trains running for a period of time on Monday.
“City of Edmonton crews have worked around the clock to address issues as they arise. We are grateful to all of our staff who go above and beyond to make repairs in such bitterly cold temperatures,” said Dennehy.
Meanwhile, a train hit a person near the 129 Avenue crossing, just south of Belvedere Station, just after 6 a.m. Monday.
Edmonton police say a man was crossing the tracks when he was hit by a stopping train and suffered minor injuries. He was treated at the scene before being taken to a local hospital by paramedics for precautionary measures.
The collision also caused service disruptions on the Capital Line LRT between Coliseum and Clareview stations for an hour.
EPS adds as the collision happened on the tracks, ETS is leading the investigation.
Edmontonians who are planning to travel via Edmonton Transit are advised to check ETS social media or the Edmonton Transit Planner ahead of their departure time in case of delays.
