WestJet cancels 104 flights Friday due to weather

By Lauryn Heintz

WestJet announced Friday afternoon that more than 100 of its scheduled flights were being cancelled due to extreme weather conditions and intermittent precipitation which is impacting the airline’s operations.

The cancellations are right across the prairies, which impacts operations across WestJet’s network.

It’s so cold in Canada’s prairies that de-icing fluid is ineffective, which leaves bridges and fuel stations inoperable.

WestJet also says as a safety precaution, it is limiting the amount of time crews and ground partners spend outside.

“We sincerely thank our guests for their ongoing patience as our teams and partners on the ground, in the air and behind the scenes work tirelessly, battling frigid temperatures, to ensure a safe operation,” said David Powell, WestJet Vice-President, Airports, in a statement. “Your travel plans are extremely important to us, and we are committed to providing timely and proactive communication as we work to restore our operations as the weather forecast evolves.”

Those scheduled to fly with the airline are advised to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.

WestJet says flexible change/cancel guidelines are in place for guests travelling to or from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba between Jan. 11 and Jan. 15, 2024.

The airline cancelled 87 flights on Thursday.
