Edmonton police believe the human remains found northeast of the city are those of an unreported missing woman and were “placed” there.
The Edmonton Police Service says the remains were found in the area northeast of the Evergreen Trailer Park, south of Manning Drive.
Police tell CityNews investigators believe the remains were “placed” at the location where they were found “based on the investigation and manner” in which they were found.
Police did not say when the remains were found but told CityNews “they were recovered within the past year.”
Work is underway with a forensic anthropologist and the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the woman and determine the cause and manner of death.
Homicide detectives and the missing persons unit are investigating. They are asking residents and landowners in the area to contact police if they noticed any suspicious activity over the past year.
“We have already spoken to community members regarding suspicious activity in the area,” Acting Staff Sgt. Jared Buhler said in the news release. “That being said, we are hopeful this news release will assist us in reaching additional residents, landowners or others who may travel in this area and noticed something suspicious or unusual.”
Police have shared the image of a shirt and piercing linked to the investigation. They are asking anyone who may not have reported a missing person – who may have been wearing those items – to come forward.
“Our investigation has helped us exclude any missing females reported to police, to date,” said Buhler. “However, if you recognize these items and have a female in your life that you have not heard from for some time, we urge you to reach out to us as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information regarding the remains or an unreported missing woman are asked to call 780-423-4567.
