Teen facing 16 charges after stealing car, pointing gun at Edmonton police

Normally, sweet and 16 go hand-in-hand, but that’s not the case for one 16-year-old who is facing 16 charges, including for pointing a gun at Edmonton police.

EPS says on Dec. 15, an officer from the Targeted Response to Auto-theft Prevention team (TRAP) was driving an unmarked police car around 12:10 a.m. when they noticed a vehicle with a stolen license plate.

The officer reportedly continued to monitor the vehicle, when, after a short time, it ended up next to the police vehicle. Police say at this time, the driver pointed a handgun at the officer.

A traffic stop was then attempted by other police officers who were in the area, but the stolen vehicle fled the scene.

Police say they continued to monitor the vehicle as it drove into Fort Saskatchewan.

Once in there, the vehicle eventually stopped as it hit the garage door of a home, at which point officers were able to take the driver into custody.

Officers found a loaded handgun in the waistband of the driver following a search after they were in custody.

“Stolen vehicles are very dangerous for the public and for our officers,” says TRAP Acting Staff Sergeant Ian Strom. “In this instance alone, a youth with no regard for public safety pointed a firearm at another motorist who happened to be a police officer. We are grateful for the prompt actions of our responding officers who were able to take the suspect into custody.”

The 16-year-old was charged with 16 offences, including pointing a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, prohibited firearm in a vehicle, careless use/storage of a firearm, flight from officers, and three counts of breaching conditions of a release order.
