By News Staff

Strathcona County will host the 2026 Alberta Summer Games.

Athletes from 14 different sports – including athletics, swimming, baseball and volleyball – will converge on the municipality east of Edmonton.

The exact dates for the Games have not been released but the event is expected to take place over four days in July 2026.

“We are honoured to be selected to host the 2026 Alberta Summer Games and I know that the welcoming spirit and hospitality that Strathcona County is known for will be on full display,” Mayor Rod Frank said.

The Alberta government is pledging $820,000 in operational funding to cover staffing, transportation and promotions.

Alberta athletes qualify for the Games through zone playoffs and selections.

The Alberta government says the Games bolster local economies while showcasing athletes who go on to represent Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“For host communities, they leave a legacy of enhanced infrastructure, trained volunteers and tourism revenue,” Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow said. “For athletes, the Games teach teamwork, build confidence and promote healthy lifestyles that can last well into adulthood.”

Strathcona County previously hosted the Alberta Games in 1987 (summer) and 2000 (winter).

The 2023 Alberta Summer Games were held in Okotoks and Diamond Valley.
