Edmonton police say a 55-year-old woman is in critical condition after being assaulted by two girls at the Coliseum LRT station Nov. 26 around 8:30 p.m.

The woman is believed to have been sitting on a bench waiting for the train before the suspects confronted her and beat her unconscious, according to police.

Officers are calling it a “violent assault.”

EPS says the girls fled the scene but were arrested by police shortly after.

The woman was taken to hospital with significant head and facial injuries where she continues to receive treatment.

Both suspects have been charged with aggravated assault.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the alleged attack to come forward.

“While we have charged the two youth suspects, we understand there were witnesses on the platform at the time of the assault who we are looking to speak with,” said Staff Sgt. Ian Brooks in a news release. “We encourage those witnesses to contact police at their earliest convenience.”
