Edmonton’s annual Remembrance Day ceremonies will be taking place on Saturday.
Various events will be taking place around the city, including city hall, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum, and more.
City Hall
The Loyal Edmonton Regiment will host a ceremony at city hall starting at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will honour military veterans, serving members and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country in times of war and peace.
For those interested in attending the ceremony, doors will open at 9:30 a.m., and guests are encouraged to be seated no later than 9:55 a.m.
Following the service, there will be an outdoor procession to the City Hall Cenotaph where wreaths will be laid.
In addition, the Last Post will be played by a military bugler from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment at sunset from Nov. 6 to 10, in the City Room at city hall.
Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum
The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Remembrance Day.
A brief Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m.
The city says 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of United Nations Peacekeeping.
“Canada has a long history of helping defend and maintain peace around the world. More than 125,000 Canadian Armed Forces members have served in international peacekeeping efforts in dozens of countries. We recognize and remember their courage, service and sacrifice,” said the City of Edmonton in a statement.
Other ways to mark Remembrance Day
Edmontonians are encouraged to observe this important day in meaningful ways. This can be done by observing a private moment of reflection, making poppies to hang in your window, laying poppies at a local cenotaph or taking time to learn about Canada’s rich military history.
The High Level Bridge, Walterdale Bridge, City Hall, Muttart Conservatory, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton Tower and Rossdale Power Plant will be lit in red for Remembrance Day.
No ceremonies will be taking place at Edmonton’s Municipal Cemeteries. However, anyone who wishes to go to one can still do so.
Road closures and transit
Several road closures are expected to be in effect across the city. The city recommends looking at their traffic page to find information on all the closures.
Edmonton Transit will be running on Saturday. ETS notes that it will be free for all veterans and active members who are in military uniform or legion dress.
In addition, a Canadian Forces or RCMP identification card, a Veterans’ card or National Defence Record card identifying the individual as past or current military personnel can also be used.
The entire system, including buses, DATS, and trains will stop at 11 a.m. for one minute of silence to pay special tribute to all Canadian veterans if it is safe to do so.
