Reports of firearm at Edmonton mall turned out to be a lighter: police

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported Kingsway Mall was locked down.

Police tactical response teams responded to reports of a firearm in an Edmonton mall Friday afternoon.

CityNews received a tip from a viewer who said the situation was unfolding at Kingsway Mall.

The EPS confirms there was no active shooter.

“It was reported to police that a male had a firearm in his possession while walking through the food court area of Kingsway Mall,” police said in a statement.

“EPS members located the male in question shortly thereafter walking outside the mall on Princess Elizabeth Avenue.”

Police say it was determined the item in question was actually a lighter that looked like a firearm.

At this time, no charges are pending but the incident remains under investigation.
