Lauren Hunter from SONiC 102.9 is well-known for the extravagant Halloween costumes she creates each year. Laura Krause has details on her ‘coolest’ costume yet.

She’s known for her extravagant Halloween costumes. Handmade and inspired by the top news headlines of the year. But this year’s costume might be the ‘coolest’ one yet.

That’s not a real fridge – inside is Lauren Hunter – a radio host at CityNews’ sister station SONiC 102.9.

“It is a nod to you know, we’re all feeling the grocery prices this year, but we all love food. I know I love food, so it was easy to get the source material for this costume, I just had to eat a lot of stuff,” said Hunter.

“The idea is one of the hardest parts for sure. I look at all of the fun news stories of the year that you can poke fun at, tongue and cheek. This year, there was so much going on, and I just wanted to make people a fun costume that was going to tickle them and make them laugh. And that’s why I went with a fridge. Everyone loves fridges, everyone has one, they can relate to one.”

Although the ever-increasing cost of food is not cool, Lauren Hunter’s Halloween costumes always are – and this year is no exception. She is inspired by the top news headlines of the year.

In 2021- the cargo ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal, or the cracked piers found on the Valley Line southeast LRT last year – which is now slated to open next week – 3 years behind schedule.

This year’s costume was hard work – taking 50 hours to build. With more than 300 glue sticks, and over 100 square feet of foam. It’s Hunter’s biggest costume yet.

“It was one of my hardest and most challenging to build because it has doors, it has an inside and an outside,” explained Hunter.

The costume is so big she had to take her door off the hinges to get it outside her house

“It’s definitely my heaviest costume. I think next year I will pay attention to doorway measurements so my costume can leave my house.”
