Not much remains of a duplex in south Edmonton after a fire broke out around 5:30 Thursday morning.
Fire crews remain on the scene along Cherniak Way. They say the duplex was vacant and was a new build with no one living there yet.

Flames quickly spread to neighbouring homes making for a stressful morning for those living nearby.
“Between the crackling of the fire and the smell of the smoke with the windows open, it was my girlfriend yelling there was a fire and we ran out and there were just flames,” explained Walker Curtis, a neighbour.
Another neighbour, Michael Agwunobi added, “When I came out I just saw everything was orange and I just took my kids out everywhere was smoke, and fire so I just ran out of my house with my kids and my wife.”

Fire officials say seven trucks and firefighters responded, but say it’s still a fluid situation.
“You can see it’s quite an unstable scene obviously there was a collapse on the second floor down to the main floor – crews can’t get inside to attack those hot spots but it does look like they have it well under control,” said Paul Norrish, District Chief.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and crews will likely be on site throughout the day monitoring. ATCO and EPCOR also responded. There’s no word yet either of the cost of damage.
