Four teenage boys have been arrested in connection with what police are calling the “violent assault” of a 17-year-old in Leduc Monday.
Leduc RCMP say police were called to a parking lot at 50 Street and Corinthia Drive – near Corinthia Park – around 12:10 p.m.
Police say the victim was taken to hospital with injuries. They have since been released.
Police have charged four Leduc teens aged 13 to 16 with assault causing bodily harm. They have been released and are scheduled to appear in court in Leduc Nov. 10.
The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A statement was issued by the Black Gold School Division Tuesday evening, saying the school board is shocked by the incident before adding supports would be available to those who need it.
“We are shocked by this incident and deeply concerned for the victim and their family,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Romanchuk. “We will do whatever we can to support them during this very difficult time.
“The safety of all students is important to us, and we are cooperating fully with the RCMP and our VTRA partners. It is important that we allow the professionals to deal with the situation and not have anyone attempt to take matters into their own hands – that will only make things worse.”
‘Extremely disturbing video’
RCMP tell CityNews they are aware of an “extremely disturbing” video being shared on social media.
“Leduc RCMP, we’ve seen this video,” said Const. Cheri-Lee Smith, the Leduc RCMP public information officer. “It is completely unacceptable behavior and it won’t be tolerated. Again, I encourage anyone who has it not to share it, and anyone receiving it not to watch it. It is extremely disturbing. I can’t say it enough. The behaviors seen in that video are just unacceptable.
“We as a society need to do better.”
Smith says police can’t yet speak to the motivation of the alleged assault. The investigation is ongoing.
RCMP are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
Leduc RCMP say they are working with the Black Gold School Division and Violence Threat Risk Assessment team members to support the community.
